12 things to see at the SFIAAFF

Here's my recommendations on things to see at the SFIAAFF. Some are fairly obvious, and others not so..

Opening Night & Closing Night
http://asianamericanfilmfestival.org/events/opening_night.php
http://asianamericanfilmfestival.org/events/closing_night.php

Sure, they're expensive tickets, but they're the best opportunity to hang out and meet cool people: Asian Americans who are making films, and Asian Americans who love supporting them. Plus, there's usually some freebies!

From Novel to the Big Screen: American Knees to Americanese
http://asianamericanfilmfestival.org/events/americanese_panel.php

Eric Byler's Americanese is based upon Shawn Wong's novel, American Knees. If you love hearing about artists' processes, this is the event for you.

Punching at the Sun West Coast Premiere Party
http://manja.org/events/2006/03/17/punching-at-the-sun-west-coast-premiere-after-party

Come celebrate the premiere of Bay Area native Tanuj Chopra's Punching at the Sun. The party features Maneesh the Twister of the Dhamaal crew, Kush Arora and Marcella (Lady-Lu), as well as a very special live Bhangra dance performace by Dholrhythms.

Music Video Asia
http://asianamericanfilmfestival.org/films/program_detail.php?i=6

This might be the most under-rated program on the schedule, particularly since it features mostly Asian American talent. Jason Koxvold had two amazing videos in last year's program, and no doubt his Citizens Here and Abroad video will be amazing as well. Other videos to watch for are Karmacy's Blood Brothers video; 45 RPM: Partytime!!!/Glorious Life by Hellen Jo; and FAR EAST MOVEMENT: Western by Evolution Jackson.

Directions in Sound
http://asianamericanfilmfestival.org/events/directions_in_sound.php

We're co-presenting an evening of Directions in Sound, featuring THE PACIFICS! Local favorites From Monument to Masses headline the Du Nord show, which will likely sell out. Buy your tickets early!

Picture Bride & Karate Kid II
http://asianamericanfilmfestival.org/films/film_detail.php?i=91
http://asianamericanfilmfestival.org/films/film_detail.php?i=63

A tribute to filmmaker Kayo Hatta, and actor Pat Morita.

3rd i South Asian Shorts 2006
http://asianamericanfilmfestival.org/films/program_detail.php?i=1

This always sells out. Buy early.

A View From Topaz
http://asianamericanfilmfestival.org/films/film_detail.php?i=4

Surreptitious footage of life in an internment camp.

Colma: The Musical
http://www.asianamericanfilmfestival.org/films/film_detail.php?i=32

I think the title says it all. It's a musical about Colma. Crazy.

introducing MANJA PROMOTE

I'm happy to announce the preview of our new service, MANJA PROMOTE.

(this is a limited preview that we're doing in partnership with the Asian American Film Festival--the official launch is still months away.)

The goal of MANJA PROMOTE is to make it easy for people to promote the things they care about, whether it's an event, a favorite musician, or a favorite charity.

When the service launches for real, anyone will be able to upload a promotion (for all you event promoters and artists out there). And, as it is today, all promotions on the service are publicly available for anyone to publish on their blog, Xanga, LiveJournal, Blogger, Friendster, or MySpace, etc...

It's a work in progress, so try it out, and let me know what you think. (you can also email me at gary at manja.org)

Thanks to the SFIAAFF for agreeing to be our guinea pigs, and thanks to everyone who's signed up so far to help support something that we all care about--Asian American Film!

we're remodelling

As you can see, we're totally in remodel mode. MANJA's been operating since 2003, and *a lot* of things have changed. Unfortuantely, the design and function of the site haven't changed accordingly. But after almost a year of planning, I'm happy to take the first step towards this transition.

Most notably, we've got a new logo. We've also added a news feed on the home page featuring updates on Asian American artists local and beyond.

There's a lot more coming, and a lot that's still going to change.

Stay tuned!

about us

MANJA exists to promote the Asian American arts community, with a focus on the San Francisco Bay Area.

We do this through by listing arts events that feature Asian American artists. We also provide links to the artists and arts organizations that are making it happen.

There's a lot of great work out there that isn't being seen (whether it's live music, film, theater, gallery shows, or spoken word), and we just want to help get the word out.

If you'd like to learn more, or if you'd like to join us, drop us a line.
