Earth, Nguyen & Fire

Earth, Nguyen & Fire is a Vietnamese American funky literary trio, formed in San Francisco,
California in 1969. Led by Ali Wong, they are best known for their hits of the 1970s, among them
"Chinese Ladies with Thank You Shopping Bags on the 38 Geary Bus" produced by Ali Wong, "List
& Less", "Nail Shop", "Non-Profit Natalie", "Anh Thu", "You Bring Out the Vietnamese In Me" and
"the Nguyen Poems". Earth, Nguyen & Fire became the first Vietnamese American performers to
headline throughout the world without an opening act, to receive Locus Arts Square Garden's
Gold Ticket Award for selling more than 100 tickets and to receive the Imaginary Viet I Am
Records Crystal Globe Award for selling more than five million albums in foreign markets.

Jimmy Thong Tran born in Torrance, raised in Berkeley, Jimmy Thong Tran is a graduated Ethnic
Studies major from UC Berkeley who is really glad to be out of school. He has been involved with
Theatre Rice, REACH, SASC, APASD, Proletariat Bronze, Asian American Theatre Company, and
Youth Speaks. He is a member of the 2004 San Francisco Poetry Slam team and the 2004
National Collegiate Poetry Slam champions UC Berkeley's CalSlam team, which decided to stay
together, forming a 4-person collective called Jigsaw. He recently taped for the 5th season of
HBO's Def Poetry Jam in New York.

Thien-Bao Thuc Phi was born in Sai Gon, Viet Nam and raised in the Phillips Neighborhood of
South Minneapolis. A multiple Minnesota Grand Poetry Slam champion and National Poetry Slam
individual finalist, Bao Phi has become one of the premiere performance poets in the nation, and
has been a featured performer in venues from the Nuyorican Poets Café to Stanford University.
He was a featured poet on season three of HBO’s Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam and
remains an active member of the national Asian American spoken word community. One of his
poems was recently selected by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins to appear in the
prestigious Best American Poetry anthology to be published in 2006. Currently he continues to
tour the U.S. and works at the Loft, a nonprofit literary arts organization, where he created and
curates Equilibrium, a highly successful spoken word and performance poetry series which seeks
to build community amongst people of color and indigenous peoples through the arts. Check out
