Film Preview/Discussion: Justin Lin's Finishing the Game

Film Preview/Discussion: Justin Lin's Finishing the Game

Please join us for a screening of the film short, BEYOND THE JOURNEY: FROM BETTER LUCK TOMORROW TO FINISHING THE GAME, and a conversation between Justin Lin, director of the new film FINISHING THE GAME, cast members Sung Kang and Roger Fan, and Chi-hui Yang of the Center for Asian American Media, about the making of FINISHING THE GAME, Asian-American stereotypes, and the challenges, and rewards, of making movies with Asian-American themes.

About FINISHING THE GAME: When martial arts icon Bruce Lee died suddenly in 1973, he left behind 12 minutes of footage for his dream project THE GAME OF DEATH. Eager to exploit Lee's fame, Hollywood executives search for stand-ins for Lee in order to finish the film. FINISHING THE GAME is a hilarious mockumentary about their efforts. At once affectionate and satirical, the film pokes holes in Asian-American stereotypes as it chronicles the mishaps of a former-TV-star-turned-door-to-door salesman, an accidental porn star, an Indian doctor, a Bruce Lee knockoff named Breeze Loo, and a deluded white guy as they vie to become the new Bruce Lee. Director Justin Lin, fresh from making big-budget Hollywood films ANNAPOLIS (2006) and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT (2006), here returns to his indie roots. The film opens in San Francisco on October 19.

JUSTIN LIN's solo directorial debut, BETTER LUCK TOMORROW, premiered at Sundance in 2002. He was named one of "10 to watch" by Variety and was honored with a John Cassavetes Award nomination at the 2004 Independent Spirit Awards. In 2003, Lin established his production company, Trailing Johnson Productions, and produced and co-directed the documentary SPOTLIGHTING. His other directing credits include ANNAPOLIS (2006) and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT (2006).

CHI-HUI YANG is the director and programmer of the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF), a presentation of the Center for Asian American Media.
