This Way Up featuring Deann Borshay Liem, Denizen Kane, David Choong Lee, Sylvia Ji, Anna Kim, and David Choe

Korean American Youth Alliance at the Korean Community Center of the East Bay and the Oakland Asian Cultural Center Present “This Way Up”

The Korean American Youth Alliance at the Korean Community Center of the East Bay, and the Oakland Asian Cultural Center will be co-sponsoring the first Korean American Artists’ Showcase and Gallery Walk fundraiser at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center. “This Way Up,” will include live performances from various Korean American Artists in the Bay Area. This event will feature various mediums of art including film, break-dancing, Korean drumming, spoken word, graffiti, stencil, urban and fine art. Korean American artists who will be participating include Deann Borshay Liem, filmmaker of First Person Plural, an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival; Denizen Kane, Def Poetry Jam’s Slam Artist; David Choong Lee, a local Bay Area urban artist; Crayone, a native Bay Area graffiti artist; Sylvia Ji, and Korean American artists including Anna Kim, an aspiring Artist and youth in our program.

We are also very excited to feature David Choe, world renowned Bay Area Korean American artist in our Artists’ Showcase. We will unveil his latest art piece, which was inspired by the youth of this program. At this one day event, we will include a silent Art auction. All artists have graciously submitted pieces to be auctioned off and all proceeds will go to saving the Youth Program at the Korean Community Center of the East Bay.

The Korean American Youth Alliance has been a staple of the Oakland community since 1992 and after 15 years of operating, we are in grave danger of shutting down. We hope that community members can support the growth and stability of this vital youth program serving youth in the greater Bay Area. This is a great opportunity for young aspiring artists and community members to gather together for a great cause. We hope that everyone can come and support our grassroots event. Together, we hope to save this amazing long-running youth program in Oakland.

This one day Artists’ Showcase and Gallery Walk will be held on Saturday December 8th at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center from 5:30 to 8:00. Presale tickets for the event can be purchased for a suggested donation of $5 at the Korean Community Center of the East Bay located at 4390 Telegraph Ave. Suite A Oakland, CA 94609. No one will be turned away for a lack of funds. Please feel free to contact me at CJLee@KCCEB.org or (510)547-2662 x 203 if you have any questions. Hope to see everyone there.
